Lori Idlout Stands with Redfish Art Studio: A Call for Action on Indigenous Arts Funding

Nunavut MP Lori Idlout has stepped up to support Redfish Art Studio, expressing both her frustration and her commitment to ensuring the studio receives the funding it was promised.

Redfish Art Studio / Redfish Art Society has been a beacon of creativity and cultural expression, providing a space where Indigenous artists can share their stories and preserve their languages through art. However, like many Indigenous-led initiatives, the studio has faced challenges due to broken promises and insufficient funding.

Nunavut MP Lori Idlout has stepped up to support Redfish Art Studio, expressing both her frustration and her commitment to ensuring the studio receives the funding it was promised. In her own words:

“I was very happy to promote the Redfish Art Studio / Redfish Art Society. I was frustrated to hear about the broken promises made to them. I will follow-up next week with the ministry to ensure that Redfish get their funding and that Indigenous languages are better funded.”

Idlout’s statement highlights a critical issue: the continued underfunding of Indigenous-led artistic and language initiatives. Art is not just a form of expression; for Indigenous communities, it is a means of cultural preservation, resilience, and identity-building.

Her pledge to follow up with the ministry underscores the need for accountability. Indigenous artists and organizations should not have to constantly fight for the funding they were promised—funding that is essential for keeping their cultures alive.
